Chinese New Year 2018 – The Year of The Dog

Gung Hay Fat Choy! The Jesse Davies & Associates team is wishing you good fortune, luck and good health this Lunar New Year!

This year Chinese New Year begins on Friday, February 16th, 2018. Chinese New Year is a very vibrant and festive celebration that lasts for 2 weeks and is celebrated not just in China but also in many other Chinese communities around the world. In fact, one sixth of the world’s population will be cheering “Gung Hay Fat Choy” on February 16th rather than on January 1st!

2018 is the Year of the Dog

Do you know what the other 11 animals are? In order, the 12 animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each year is associated with a zodiac animal and each of the 12 animals gets an outing every dozen years. 2018 will be the first year of the earth dog since 1958. Under the Chinese zodiac, if you were born in a Year of the Dog, it is believed that you possess the best traits of human nature. You are faithful, smart, honest, friendly, straightforward, and you have a strong sense of responsibility.

So how is the Chinese New Year celebrated?

Some of the festivities include bell ringing, lighting firecrackers, and watching the traditional lion dances. There is a reunion dinner where Chinese families gather together on New Year’s Eve.  Just before dinner they clean their houses to sweep away bad fortune on New Year’s Day. Children are given red envelopes stuffed with money (Hong BaoAng Pao, or Lai See). The red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is a symbol to ward off evil spirits.
